Gardening 365 – Day 74 and Dear Friends

Alas, Dear Friends and Gardeners, woe is me.

Woe, be to the gardener in Idaho in March. I planted the salad bar last week. Now I must report that only two days ago it was under an inch of new snow. Today the sun is warming the place, me included, and tomorrow it could be 62 degrees. Sprout! I whispered to the seeds. Sprout! For you know not what fate awaits you my tender green seedlings. Woe.

The cane berries need a serious whacking and the Undergardener managed to get one of the Sweet Purple Asparagus crowns in the perennial border. He then hastily bolted with his trusty dog for a fly fishing expedition. I can’t be too hard on him since he also cut back all the ornamental grasses so the tulips can see the light of day. In fact, I packed his lunch and set aside some dog biscuits. Looks like the cane berries will be my project. That’s OK, there is something rewarding about chopping the daylights out of things.

Until next week, I’ll continue to search for signs of life in the Gardens of Ranch du Bois. So far its been short and sweet.
