Gardening 365, Day 4

Things accomplished before 9 am today:

A quick review of Allergy-Free Gardening by Tom L. Ogren. Goal: to utilize more allergy-free plants in garden landscapes and to educate others re: Ogren’s 1-10 scale of allergy inducing plants.

Had a quickie look-see at the new White Flower Farm catalog. Page 67: Good Grief! Does the world REALLY need twenty hybrid echinaceas? And no where does it tell you they need special treatment the first year you grow them. Uh, that would be in order to keep them alive. I know, since I killed a couple of these snazzy $15 plants. I found out they need to be kept from blooming the first time around. Nip them in the bud. Apparently it gives them strength. OK.

Lo and behold! on page 84, and what wonder should appear (not a miniature sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer) but the elusive Iris chrysographes, the black flowered Siberian. I’ve been searching for this for 3 or 4 months. Order up!
