Anne Raver

One of my favorite garden writers is Anne Raver, of the New York Times. A week ago she did a great column about her elderly mother, 93 years old, stridently independent and fiesty.Titled “A Good Year for Beets and Self Reliance,” I felt like I could walk through the garden with Anne and her mother, and I wanted so much to taste those Eastern Shore pickled beets. Now THAT’S what good writing is all about. Check it out. And, Raver’s book by Random House, Deep in the Green, is a wonderful collection of her columns/essays and a perfect book for armchair gardeners. Especially now that the frost has come and we are sidelined for a couple of months.

I am headed to McCall, Idaho for two days. Stay tuned to see if I can manage to post ‘from a distance.’
