Official frost free date! May 9th! I haul all my little starts in every night even though I am very tired of the routine and my window sills are full and more. I had to put one tray in my bathtub today. Its the nasturiams that are the real problem. i over planted and those little guys are not cold hardy at all. In the autumn, they curl up and go black six weeks before the marigolds and petunias die their natural deaths. Last year I was thankful. I had planted trailing nasturiams on May 20th and by the middle of August, a number of them had vines as wise as my finger, each 6-7 feet long and several of them were trying to poke through a stone wall. If we lived in one of the warmer climates, they might have succeeded. I can visualise nasturiams being real pests in the "right" climate. Why I planted them instead of the foxgloves I planned on is beyond me. Oh well, I can still start foxgloves.

I never thought about roasting the garlic before I use it in the pesto... I've got some arugula outside right now that has a new purpose tomorrow! The western tanager is breathtaking... lucky you to see one!

I keep forgetting I can use greens in pesto. We have scarlet tanagers in the woods, but they never come to the feeder.
